The Kāntara movie has powerfully showcased the role of Daiva or protector deities in forest-dwelling societies of costal Karnataka, this post explores other such traditions from across the country.
As ever, Divine. You are blessed with beautiful assembly of words, keeping it between Mrs. Sudha Murthy and Mr. Taroor. Leaning towards Sudha amma more.
When you referring to Daiva, just don't do it from Kanatara Movie content. And it is not just a Coastal Karnataka. The region is different from Kannada region which is called Tulunadu. Tulunadu was added layer when Karnataka state was formed. If you have to understand Tulunadu and Bootharadane, you should understand ParashuRama Srishti, Tulu months, Tulu Calendar, Tulunadu culture, Tulunadu food and Tulunadu Bootharadane (Daiva). Posting just a Kantara movie poster is not that content which you describes Daviaradane of Tulunadu. Katara movie just a content in Kannada Language, but it cannot be Kannada culture, indeed it is Tulunadu culture. It doesn't mean my words are I have disrespect for Kannada, I equally love Kannada. But I don't want to Tulunadu existence fade away just due to it is in same state.
I lived in Udupi as a student for two years and can absolutely understand your perspective with respect to TuLu culture being the heart of practices like Bhootaaradhane. I have read Paduru Gururaja Bhat's book on TuLuva History and Culture too. My intention of writing this post was limited to showing the similarity of practices in different regions of India and specifically, the role that such traditions play in protecting the environment. I understand your concerns but just that this post did not allow me to elaborate on TuLu culture's centrality with respect to Bhootaraadhane.
